Richard was the youngest of the 10 children born to
William James Martin and Lou Anna O'Dell Martin.

Richard L. Martin

Richard Lee Martin, 85, 1365 Liggates Road, Lynchburg, and formerly of Fieldale, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003, at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born in Martinsville on May 16, 1918, he was the son of the late William James Martin and Lou Odell Martin.

He attended Fieldale School and was a member and former usher at the Fieldale Baptist Church.

Martin served as a sergeant first class in the Army, retiring after 21 years of service. During World War II, he served in Europe, Korea and Okinawa and received numerous awards and certificates of appreciation and devotion to duty.

After retiring from the military, he worked for Fieldcrest Mills in Fieldale, from which he retired after 16 years, and later worked for McKee Funeral Home.

He was a member of the Bassett American Legion Post 11 where he served in various capacities, including post commander and adjutant chaplain. He also served as American Legion Sixth District Commander and adjutant chaplain, and he was a lifetime member and past chaplain of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4637, Martinsville.

Martin served on the Martins/Henry County War Memorial Committee and was instrumental in the placement of the monument at the old Henry County Courthouse in Martinsville.

He was a graduate of American Legion College and had served as a counselor for the Virginia American Legion Boys State.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Georgia Ann M. Taylor; and seven brothers, Harbor Martin, J.W. Martin, Raymond Martin, Cutler Martin, Lewis T. Martin, Morton Martin and Russell Martin.

Surviving are his wife, Melva S. Martin of the home; a step-daughter, Sylvia J. Jennings of Lynchburg; and one step-grandchild.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Fieldale Baptist Church with Dr. Joe Bryant officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at McKee-Stone Funeral Services.
