In Oct. 1864, at the age of 14 years old, he enlisted in Company C 28th Tenn Cavalry, CSA, with John P Henley, Captain; Gordon Hayes, Colonel; B.J. Hill, Brigadier General. He fought with John P Henley & J C Henley & Samuel A Henley. "I was in a skirmish between Sewanee & Cowans and assisted in capturing two Federal soldiers. I was not injured while in the service". Asked if ever in prison? "No, I was captured and kept one night, but James Raulston and the other captors were drinking and I escaped. Attesting witness R C Pearson ....."I am acquainted with John H Henley of Tracy City, Tenn and knew him from a boy and he served with me in the Confederate army, and owing to his youth he was used more particularly as a spy, and he was in a skirmish with us near Sewanee..." Civil War Application #S15697, July 1, 1927.
