Bessie Grace Helton Cannon, 97, was the daughter of the late Thomas Helton and Henrietta Collins Helton. She was the sibling of thirteen brothers and sisters. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Bessie is survived by two daughters, Patricia Blanton of Woodstock, and Mary Jane Wesley of Midlothian; seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren; a brother, James Helton of Tennessee; a sister, Betty , of Tennessee; and many nieces and nephews.

Bessie was a charter member of Belmont Baptist Church. She and her husband were instrumental in establishing a congregation there. Bessie taught Sunday school well into her 80's.

She was a sewing instructor for Singer for twenty-five years and later worked for the University of Virginia. Bessie was an active member of the Rebekah Lodge.

Bessie will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend.

Many may recognize Bessie from the Morningside Assisted Living television commercials in which she was featured. In addition to being one of their resident celebrities, she was also their Mardi Gras Queen.

A funeral service was conducted by Rev. Greg Anderson at Belmont Baptist Church, Tuesday, May 8, 2012. Teague Funeral Home assisted the family.
