Not long afterwards, Boulder Police and representatives of the National Parks and Wildlife Service tranquilized the hapless bear and were able to catch it as it fell from the tree onto a Gym Cushion. As the bear fell, he was photographed by Andy Duann who then gave the photo to the University News Paper. After going on the Internet, the photograph went viral and the Bear became an overnight celebrity.
Sadly, as he was making his way towards Denver, he was struck by two cars and killed while trying to cross US Highway 36.
Falling Bear was estimated to be about 3 years old and weighed about 250 pounds.
