Lawrence T. "Larry" Silvis, 63, Sandy Lake Township, Sandy Lake, died at 8:02 a.m. Friday, May 4, 2012, in UPMC Northwest in Seneca after a short illness.

Born May 22, 1948, in Olean, N.Y., he was a son of Richard R. and Carol E. Everitt Silvis.

He was a graduate of Otto-Eldred High School in Duke Center. He then graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in criminal justice. He received his master's degree from Edinboro State University.

Larry retired in 2008 after serving 14 years as a Mercer County District Justice, Grove City.

Larry had more than 29 years in state law enforcement, which began as a state policeman for 11 years and then director of public safety for five years at Penn State-Behrend, Erie, before his appointment as judge.

In between state jobs, Larry was the director of police safety at Allegheny College, Meadville, for eight years. He worked for a short time as a criminal investigator with Allegheny County Power Systems, Greensburg. He was also and adjunct faculty member at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Mercyhurst College, Erie.

He was a Protestant.

He had been a member of Stoneboro Lion's Club and was a member of the Northwest Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association.

Larry was an Eagle Scout and had always stayed active with the Boy Scouts as a leader.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family. He also enjoyed woodworking and building things for his grandchildren, they were the joy of his life.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He married Janet L. Clayton Feb. 10, 1972, and she survives at home.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Dr. Brian F. Silvis and his wife, Dr. Kate Silvis of Harmony; two grandchildren, Phillip Lawrence Silvis and Clara Janet Silvis of Harmony; his parents of Duke Center; two sisters, Barbara Evans and her husband Randy of Emerald Isle, N.C., and Cheryl Eaton and her husband Jim of Warren; two brothers, Gary Silvis and his wife Coleen and David Silvis, all of Duke Center.

In lieu of flowers, "In memory of Larry Silvis" checks may be made payable to French Creek Council of Boy Scouts of America, 1815 Robison Road West, Erie, Pa., 16501.

Calling hours will be from 1 to 3 p.m. today in Oak Grove Church, 10 Oak Grove Road, Mercer.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today in the church with William N. Ewing, lay pastor, officiating.

Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Sandy Lake Township.
