ALTON - Evelyn A. Buxton, 69, died at 1:57 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, 1996, at Alton Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
Born Sept. 30, 1927, in Woodstock, Ill., she was a daughter of Anna (Ruh) Janek of Jerseyville and the late Elmer "Mike" Janek.
She was a member of Episcopal Parishes of Alton and had worked for the executive board of the International Jaycees and AT&T.
A graduate of Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., she also graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor's degree in economics. She was active in civic affairs, including the Alton Community Service League, P.E.O. Sisterhood, Junior League of Greater Alton, Easter Seal Society, Elderhostel Association and Leisure Friends.
She married Charles H. Buxton II on Feb. 14, 1953, in Crystal Lake, Ill. He died in 1993.
Surviving are two daughters, Cynthia Ann Buxton of St. Charles, Mo., and Rebecca Cummings Buxton of Anchorage, Alaska; two sons, Charles H. Buxton III of Alton and Michael Paul Buxton of St. Louis; a sister, Patricia Handley of Fairlawn, Ohio; and an aunt, Madeline Trierwiler of Arcadia, Ill. .
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Elias-Smith Funeral Home in Alton.
Private graveside services are Wednesday at Alton City Cemetery.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Alton with the Rev. Father David, Heneghan officiating.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
