After settling in Alton, Elijah engaged in the wholesale boot and shoe business with Mr. James S. Stone, who subsequently moved to Boston. Elijah then partnered with Charles W. Dimmock in the same business, under the firm of E. L. Dimmock & Co. After retiring from business in 1865, he spent the rest of his life enjoying home life and a large circle of relatives and friends. Charles Dimmock (presumably a brother) and his son, Thomas, continued to operate the business.
