Alex E. Romanchik, 79, passed from this earth Thursday Sept. 27, 2001. Born to parents, Elek (Alex) Romanchik and Anna Falatovich on January 1, 1922, in Ebervale, PA, Alex was one of eight children in a coal miner's family.
At the age of 19 Alex enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country as a corporal in Battery B, 193rd Field Artillery Battalion, serving in the campaigns in the Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe during WWII. During his tour of duty Alex was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with three Bronze Stars.
He was a member of the Fort Ricketts Post No. 8317, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Benton, and the American Legion Post 945. He was also a member of the United Methodist Church in Benton, PA.
At the time of his passing, he was preceded in death by his seven siblings, brothers John, George and Michael, and four sisters Anna, Helen, Esther, and Mary. He leaves behind his wife, Evelyn Papp-Romanchik, two sons Wayne and William Romanchik, and three step-grandchildren.
