OBITUARY: WATERFORD -- Nancy Ellen Lyon Minson, 93, of 3 Point Comfort, died at 10:01 a.m. Monday at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, where she was admitted Saturday. A native of Waterford, she was born Jan. 26, 1895, the daughter of Nelson J. and Frances Adelaide Allen Lyon. A 1913 graduate of the former Williams Memorial Institute, she was the Waterford correspondent for The Day many years ago.
Mrs. Minson was a member and past secretary of the Waterford Board of Education; a member and past president of the Waterford Public Health Nursing Service; a charter member and head of the first Parent-Teacher Association, the South Waterford PTA, which included Jorday, East Neck, West Neck Schools and the former Graniteville School. She was a member of the Child & Family Services; and a former member of the New London YWCA board of directors.
She was well-known in years past for her dramatic and humorous readings and monologues. She was the coach of many local plays.
A member and former deaconess of the First Baptist Church in New London, she was an honorary deaconess of the church. She had served as the primary Sunday School superintendent for 20 years and was a member and former leader of Circle 10 Club of the church. For many years she served as the treasurer of the Connecticut Baptist Women Association and was a past lay delegate from the church to the National Baptist Women Association Convention.
She was married to Frederick W. Minson Jr. June 20, 1914, in Waterford. He died Dec. 25, 1984.
Survivors include a son, Frederick L. Minson of Old Lyme; two daughters, Mrs. Royal Bitgood of East Lyme and Cape Canaveral, Fla. and Nancy L. Minson of Waterford; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church of New London. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in East Lyme Cemetery.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Byles Memorial Home, New London.
