According to family tradition Alfred Kent was born on a ship from Germany to America. His family name may have been Kegerreis later anglicized to Kent as was the practice of many of the earliest German families in America.

Alfred was a substitute in the Civil War where he served in the Pennsylvania 126th Reg. in Co. H, under Brigardier General Erastus B. Tyler. Alfred Kent was wounded at Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863. He attained the rank of 3rd Sergeant. Due to exposure he developed complications from which he never regained his health and died shortly after returning to his family at the close of the war.
