Edward McCarthy, 77 of 4 Mill Lane died Wednesday at Wedgemere Convalescent Home following a long illness. He was the husband of Beatrice M. (Bannon) McCarthy. Born in Pawtucket, RI he was the son of the late David and Mary Ellen (Maloney) McCarthy. He resided in Taunton most of his life and attended Taunton schools. A veteran of the Ninth Company of the United States Army in World War One, he was employed as a chef at Hickey's diner until his retirement. He was a communicant of St. Paul's Church. For 18 consecutive years he served as commander of Chapter 57, Disabled American Veterans. He was a past commander of Silver City Barracks No. 2115 Veterans of World War One and the National Order of Trench Rats. He was past junior vice-commander of the state department of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of the Raynham Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Happy Senior Citizens, the Taunton Golden Agers, and the Gaelic Society. In addition to his widow, he leaves two sons, Edward F. McCarthy of North Dighton and Charles J. McCarthy of Norton; three daughters, Mrs. Wilfred J. (Monica M.) Menard and Mrs. Edward J. (Anna B.) Lynch, both of Taunton, and Mrs. John H. (Kathleen) Thrasher of Halifax; a sister, Mrs. Mrs. Mary Gonsalves of Taunton; 24 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
