Friedrich was the son of 1754 immigrant Hans Jakob Adam and Anna Kümmerlin. Over time, the name evolved into "Adams." Frederich was a weaver and blue-dyer.

Frederick's father, Hans Jakob Adam, was born March 26, 1720, in Schlaitdorf, Wurtemberg, Germany, the son of Hans Jacob and Margaretha, née Schäfer, Adam. Church records of Evangelische Kirche Schlaitdorf confirm the birth date and immigration in 1754.

In the list of "Emigrants From Wuerttemberg" by Adolf Gerber, Hans Jacob Adam appears as Johann Jacob, a cartwright [wagner}; his wife was Anna, née Kummerlin, of Dörnach. Children listed in German church records are: Anna Magdalena, born April 9, 1743; Margaretha, born January 23, 1745; Maria, born July 10, 1747; and Barbara, born January 9, 1750.

Hans Jacob Adam and family emigrated on the Richard and Mary, arriving September 30, 1754, from Rotterdam via Cowes. He died in Germantown on September 29, 1762, according to a handwritten family history scroll by Friedrich's oldest son, Jacob, a copy of which is in possession of the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley.

The scroll states:
