James "Doc" Tinney, 84, of Rutland, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2012. Born on June 25, 1927, and raised in Newark, New Jersey, Mr. Tinney served in the United States Navy in the final year of World War II. After his service he earned a B.S. from Slippery Rock College in Pennsylvania in 1950. While working as a teacher and then as a principal in Pennsylvania, he earned his Master of Education Degree in 1953 and his Doctor of Education Degree in 1958, both from the University of Pittsburgh.
Mr. Tinney held a variety of positions in research and administration in Pennsylvania and New Jersey until he became the Superintendent of Schools in Pitman, New Jersey, from 1963-68. In 1968, Mr. Tinney moved to Rutland where he was the Superintendent of Schools from 1968-72. While an educator, Mr. Tinney was involved in many professional activities including being a life member of Phi Beta Kappa and a member of the Vermont Superintendents Association.
Following a long career in education, Mr. Tinney was a co-owner of Rosen & Berger Auto Parts from 1972-1989. In between customers, he managed to complete the New York Times crossword puzzle most every day. He also continued to be active in the community. He was a member of the Elks and the American Legion. An avid golfer, he was a long-standing member of the Rutland Country Club, serving two terms as the president. He was often found cooking for large groups at the Elks or at the Rutland Country Club, something he enjoyed doing for all the family barbecues.
Mr. Tinney is survived by his wife, June Tinney of Rutland, her sons, Michael Kelley and his wife Kim, Timothy Kelley and his wife Susan, and six grandchildren. He is also survived by his daughter, Jeanne Tinney, from a previous marriage, who lives in Pittsburgh, PA. Mr. Tinney was predeceased by his brothers John, Joseph and Daniel. He is survived by his sisters Mary of Georgia and Eleanor of New Jersey, and his brother Michael of New Jersey and several nieces.
Arrangements are being handled by Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland. Visiting hours with the family will be held on Monday, May 14, from 4-6:30 p.m. A service will take place at Clifford Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 15, at 2 p.m., followed immediately by interment at Riverside Cemetery in Proctor, VT.
