Wayne was the husband of Wendy Ritschel Bilheimer, the father of two, and the son of Harold & Dorathea Gogle Bilheimer. He was killed in the line of duty in southern York County in a helicopter crash while he and another trooper were searching for a body in the Susquehanna River. The plane hit the power lines and both troopers were killed. The crash happened between Lower Bear Island and Boeckel's Landing in southern York County.

They were looking for a reported jumper from the Norman Wood bridge. The bridge is just north of Big Bear island. The overhead power lines which he struck are located just north of the island, he died in the accident, the observer drowned. Paul was a pilot for the Pa. National guard and flew the huge chopper called a flying crane. He flew this crane in the same area for the PSP scuba team when they removed a small plane that crashed in the river.
