Clara Mae was the third of nine children. She graduated from Nescopeck High School in 1945. In 1958 she married Ralph Hunter, and the couple raised one son and one daughter. She retired in 1980 from the Sears and Roebuck Company at the Whitehall Mall in Allentown. Prior to that, she was a secretary for the former American Car and Foundry Industries in Berwick, Columbia County, Pennsylvania.
