About 1904 - started in the lumber business for himself. Fred purchased a farm east of Iroquois, overlooking the St. Lawrence River near the head of the old Morrisburg Canal, which he called "Beachside Farm". He built a sawmill and cheesebox factory on the riverside of his property which he operated for many years until it was destroyed by fire. He then operated a saw and stave mill in Iroquois on Stave Mill Point (Patton's) which ultimately too, was destroyed by fire. He then built a fruit basket and cheese box factory on College street in Iroquois.
He was appointed manager of the M.F. Beach Co. Ltd. factory in Winchester during the illness of N.W. Beach. This was around 1934.
