Thomas Ray "Tom" Bowin, 52, of Columbus, died at 11:19 a.m. Monday, May 1, 2000, at St. John's Maude Norton Memorial Hospital, Columbus, after a short illness.

He was born Sept. 16, 1947, at Columbus, to Thomas E. and Mary Richards Bowin.

He attended Columbus schools and graduated from Columbus High School in 1966. He later moved to Phoenix, Ariz.

He married Mavis Westberg of Elk River, Minn., on Sept. 29, 1979, at Des Moines, Iowa. She survives of the home.

The Bowins moved from Phoenix to Minnesota in 1983. They returned to Columbus in July of 1992.

Mr. Bowin's last work was as a voluntary school bus deputy for the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.

He was a member of the Church of God Prophecy, rural Columbus.

He also was a member of the Kansas Peace Officers Association.

Additional survivors include a daughter, Jackie Bowin, stationed with the U.S. Navy in Goose Creek, S.C.; two sons, Thomas A. Bowin and Robert Bowin, both of the home; a sister, Linda Napier of Columbus; two nephews; and fivegreat-nieces and great-nephews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Murdock Funeral Home, Columbus, with the Rev. Randy Arnold and the Rev. David Westberg officiating.

Burial will be in the Hosey Hill Cemetery, Weir.

Family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Murdock Funeral Home, Columbus.
