Mrs. Mary L. Brewster, pioneer Syracusan, dies
Funeral services will be tomorrow; burial in Oakwood

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary L. Brewsster, widow of Henry D. Brewster and mother of Neal and Henry B. Brewster, who died at 4 o'clock yesterday morning in her home, 423 Douglas Street, will be held at the home at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. The Rev. Dr. Henry Harrison Hadley, rector of St. Pauls Church, will conduct the services and burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Bearers will be Charles P. Morse, George D. Williams, William R. Johnson, Dr. Charles H. Hitchcock, J. Frank Neal and John Lighthall.

Mrs. Brewster was born in Cortland April 22, 1847, and was in her 87th year. In failing health for six months, Mrs. Brewster's condition became alarming to her family and friends several weeks ago. Suffering from a complication of diseases, her condition grew gradually worse until the end came early yesteray.

She was the daughter of Benjamin W. and Cynthia Stanton Baum. Her father was a pioneer oil producer in the Northwestern Pennslyvania and Southern New York fields. The first man to pipe and ship petroleum out of Pennsylvania, he is credited with having owned more wells at one time than the Standard Oil Company.

Mr. Baum was founder of the Second National Bank of Syracuse, which operated for 10 years. He was the first and only president of the institution.

Mrs. Brewster's husband, who died in 1917, was a member of one of Syracuse's oldest and best known families. For many years he was an officer and director of the old Beebe interurban trolley lines and a director of the Syracuse Northern line.

Her son, Neal Brewster, is a member of the Public Service Commission. She was a sister of the late L. Frank Baum, author of "The Wizard of Oz," and other children's stories, and of the late Dr. Henry C. Baum of Syracuse.

Mrs. Brewster was a member of Morning Musicals, Inc., Harmony Circle, Social Arts club and of St. Pauls Espicopal Church. Besides her sons, she is survived by two nieces, Mrs. Charles P. Morse and Mrs. Thomas M. Peirce, and a nephew, J. Ward Neal, all of this city.
