Dade City civic leader dies at 99
DADE CITY -Ruth Embry Touchton, a longtime Dade City resident and well-known civic leader, died Thursday at the age of 99. Touchton died at home. Touchton was known to most as "Miss Polly," and was described by friends and community members as a charming, gracious and gentle "lady "who knew and loved everyone. Touchton was born March 28, 1887, in Bennettstown, Ky., and moved to Dade City in 1898 with her parents, the late Wallace Estill and Sallie Cooper Embry, and seven brothers. She attended schools in Dade City and the Agnes Scott Institute I (now Agnes Scott College) in Decatur, Ga. In 1908, she married the late Charles Floyd Touchton of Dade City, a prominent local developer and owner of the first Touchton Drug Store. She had been a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Dade "City since 1989. During World Wars I and II, Touchton was active in the Red Cross and served in the late 1950s as a volunteer in first-aid programs at the elementary schools in Dade City. She also was a volunteer at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Touchton is perhaps best remembered for her active participation in the Dade City Woman's Club, which her mother organized in 1909. Touchton was the last surviving charter member and had remained active in the club for 77 years, serving as president and remaining a member of the board of directors until her death. In recent years, the club established the Ruth E. Touchton Scholarship Fund in her honor. The fund provides financial assistance for students at the east campus of Pasco Hernando Community College. The family is asking for contributions to the scholarship fund in lieu of flowers. Touchton is survived by her only son, Charles F. Touchton Jr. of Dade City; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a niece and a great-niece, both of Dade City, and several other nieces and nephews.
