About Daniel Cony

Dan W Cony -- After some sixteen years of experience as a salesman, Dan W Cony returned to his native city, Augusta, Maine, and established a general insurance business, which he has built up into a prosperous and steadily growing enterprise. Mr Cony is active in the public affairs of Augusta, serving at the present time (1928) as City Clerk and Auditor. He was born in Augusta, Maine, February 6, 1882, son of Roger D and Catherine (Ryan0 Cony, the first mentioned of whom was born in Ireland in 1833, and was engaged as a cotton worker to the time of his death, and the last mentioned of whom was born in Ireland, May 16, 1944.

Dan W Cony attended the public schools of Augusta, graduating from Augusta High School with the Class of 1902, and matriculated in the University of Maine, where he continued his studies for two years. In 1904, he entered the employ of the International Correspondence Schools of Scrantion, Pennsylvania, as a traveling salesman, and maintained that connection for about seven years. At the end of that time he left the employ of the International Correspondence Schools and associated himself with a grocery firm in Maine. Later he was associated with two other grocery enterprises in Boston, as traveling representative, continuing in this line until 1920. In that year he returned to Augusta and engaged in a general insurance business under his own name. During the more than six years which have passed since he engaged in this line of business activity, Mr Cony has built up a very large and important patronage and has made for himself an assured place among the business men of the city. Politically, he gives his support to the principles and the candidates of the Democratic party, in the affairs of which he takes an active part, serving as chairman of the Democratic State Committee. He is active part, serving as chairman of the Democratic State Committee. He is active in local public affairs, also, and in 1923 was elected city clark and auditor. So well did he serve that he was reelected in 1925, and in 1927 he was again chosen for the term expiring January 1, 1929. Mr Cony is a interested member of the Augusta Chamber of Commerce, and is known as a public spirited citizen. Fraternally, he is affiliated with the Knights of Columbus and with the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and his religious affiliation is with the Roman Catholic Church.

Dan W Cony was married at Ellsworth, Maine, January 23, 1912, to Mary Doyle, who was born in Ellsworth, Maine, July 19, 1886, daughter of Edward E and Sabrina (Ford) Doyle, both natives of Ellsworth, Maine. Mr and Mrs Cony are the parents of two children: 1. Margaret F., born in Ellsworth, Maine, February 16, 1914. 2. Edward, born in Augusta, Maine, March 16, 1923. Mr and Mrs Cony make their home at No. 39 Western Avenue, Augusta, Maine.
