Edith Ross Pardee van Buren, 92 High school French teacher; musician
HARWICH PORT - Edith Ross Pardee van Buren, 92, died Monday at her home.
She was the wife of the late Francis van Buren for 40 years.
Mrs. van Buren was born in Hazelton, Pa., and earned a bachelor's degree from Smith College and a master's degree in French from Middlebury College.
After completing her education she taught briefly in the Pennsylvania school system and at Smith College.
She and her husband moved to Cincinnati after marrying and then moved to Harwich Port after World War II.
During her years on the Cape, she taught French at Harwich High School, Nauset Regional High School and Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School.
After retiring, she was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, the Samaritans, Recording for the Blind and the Christ Church thrift shop. She also took lessons in bird carving.
She started learning to play the violin in her 40s and the French horn in her 50s, playing in the Cape Symphony Orchestra and Harwich Town Band.
She later wrote program notes for CSO concerts for many years and played the viola in a local chamber group. She was organist, choir master and a choir singer at Christ Church in Harwich Port for 50 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Marian van Buren and Alice van Buren Kelley; a son, Peter van Buren; a sister, Constance Collings; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Christ Episcopal Church, Route 28, Harwich Port, followed by burial in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Harwich.
