William Gaston Welborn Jr., 64, formerly of Plano, Texas, passed away Saturday, May 12,2012 after living 3 years with ALS.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 18, 2012 at the Hillcrest Church of Christ in Abilene, TX. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. in Johnson Memorial Cemetery in Munday, TX under the direction of McCauley-Smith Funeral Home of Munday, TX. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 17, 2012 from 6:00 until 7:00 at the funeral home in Munday, TX.
Gaston was born January 30, 1948 in Munday, TX, to William Gaston Welborn, Sr. and Jane Traphene Welborn. He received his B.S. from ACU where he was a member of Alpha Chi, won the Texas State Championship in Debate two consecutive years 1965 and 1966. He was also invited to the National Debater Championships in 1968. He received his Law degree from UT. He was the Minister at Elgin Church of Christ from 1970 until 1974 and the Minister at Goree Church of Christ from 1974 until 1980.He was Vice President and General Counsel of Abilene Christian University from 1974 until 2005. He was elected to the Board of the Noah Project in March of 1985, served as Treasurer in 1988, Vice-chairman in 1989, and Chairman in 1990, he served on the Board until 2005; sponsor of Frater Sodalis; member of the Key City Kiwanis Club. Gaston was Chief Title Officer & Residential Counselor for Republic Title of Texas from 2005 until 2009.
Gaston is survived by his wife Julia Linares-Welborn; one daughter: Sherrill Elizabeth and husband Micah Senter and one son; William Gaston Welborn III both of New Jersey.
