OBITUARY: Thomas Benton Smith, son of Joseph and Mary Smith was born in November, 1859 and departed this life Saturday July 25, 1936 at the age of 76 years and 4 months. He had been in failing health for several years. He was the second child of a family of four children. His mother and father and one sister, Mrs. Louise Riffe and one brother, Jimmie Smith, preceded him in death and one brother, Joe Smith of Chanute, Kansas survives, besides a host of relatives and friends.

He had been away from here for some 30 years and was brought back here in sight of his old home to be laid to rest. Peace to his memory.

The death certificate for Thomas gives the date of his birth as 12 Aug 1856. This is definitely incorrect as census records show he was born about 1860. The 1900 Census gives his birth date as December 1859 and he was 7 months old. This census was taken on June 11, 1860. His parents are Joseph P. Smith and Mary Milburn (Douglas) Ball Smith and they were married on November 18, 1856 in Stone County, Missouri.
