Ira was the husband of Sarah Jane "Jennie" (Bates) Hodgson. They were married on February 15, 1877 in Clinton County, Ohio. Ira was the son of Joel Hodson and Lydia (Stanley) Hodson. Ira chose to go with the original spelling of the family's surname which was "Hodgson."

Ira had a twin brother, Isaiah D. Hodson. They were both born in May 1847 in Wilmington, Clinton County, Ohio. Ira's death certificate lists his birth date as May 22, 1847 and his brother's is listed as May 21, 1849, however, his brother's death certificate was incorrect. Ira and Isaiah were definitely twin brothers and they are listed as the same age on all of the census records (1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, etc.) As far as the actual day of birth, it is possible that one twin was born before midnight and the other slightly after midnight, but I do not know this for sure. It is possible that one of their birth dates is listed incorrectly on their death certificate.
