Robert Tate was born in Middlesbrough June 28, 1846, second son of Robert Tate, a mariner. In 1869 he married Jane Ranson Russell of West Hartlepool and they had twelve children. He was a shipwright but in 1871 at the age of 25 he joined the Durham County Constabulary. He spent nine years as village policeman at Ramshaw, near Hunstanworth. In 1881 he was transferred to Norton, near Stockton as acting sergeant and then to Sergeant first Class in March 1884. In 1885 he was transferred to Blackhill Consett and lived at 44 Derwent Street. On July 1st 1892 he was awared the Long & Faithful Service Badge and in April 1893 he was promoted to Inspector.
