John L. Achter, age 60, of Kiel, died Wednesday morning, May 16, 2012, after a brief illness at Aurora Medical Center, Two Rivers.

He was born August 4, 1951 in Sheboygan, son of Lauretta (Schram) Achter and the late Clifford Achter.

He was a 1969 graduate of New Holstein High School.

On October 21, 1972, he was united in marriage to Alice Gierke.

John worked at Kohler Company for the past 43 years.

He was dedicated to the City of Kiel, serving as a reserve police officer for the Kiel Police Department for over 25 years and was currently serving as alderman.

He was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Kiel.

John's greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed working at his summer home in Montello, fishing, hunting and working in his workshop. He could repair and fix anything and everything. He enjoyed grilling out, cooking and spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Alice of Kiel and his children, Chad Achter and special friend, Daphne Reindl of Kiel, Carrie (Josh) Newton and their children, Lila & Henry of Oshkosh, Charles (Becky) Achter and their children, Addison, Meredith & Cash of Saukville and his mother, Lauretta Achter of St Cloud. He is further survived by one sister, Lily Mae (Tony) Baus, Fond du Lac; one brother, Paul (Lois) Achter, New Holstein; sister-in-law, Janice Achter, Las Vegas, NV; brother-in-law, James Schoenborn, Johnsburg; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clifford Achter, brother, Daniel Achter & twin sister, Joan Schoenborn.

Funeral services for John will be held at 4:00 pm, Sunday, May 20, 2012, at St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Kiel with Rev. Judine Duerwaechter officiating.

Cremation has taken place. Burial will follow at the Kiel City Cemetery.
