Mrs. Octavia Byrd, 81, of Mt. Vernon, AL died May 16, 2012 at a local hospital. She retired from the Mobile County Public School System and member of St. Theresa Catholic Church. She was a foster grandparent for over 20 years. Mrs. Byrd is survived by her five sons, Tex (Alpha) Byrd, Spencer (Barbara) Byrd, Leamon (Bonnie) Byrd, Melton (Deidra) Byrd and Sebron (Susan) Byrd; five daughters, Sarranebeth Chestang, Rita Byrd, Kattie (Keith) Byrd, Audrey (Matt) Byrd and Robin (Hal) Weaver; sister, Mary A. "Dot" Byrd; 36 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The Wake will be 5 -9 pm Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Freeman Funeral Home. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 am Monday, May 21, 2012 at St. Theresa Catholic Church with Rev. John Coghlan as Celebrant. Interment will be in Byrd Cemetery. The family would like to thank everyone for their prayers, visits, thoughts and food, your kindness is appreciated.
