Helen was born February 14, 1913 in Bloomfield, Nebraska to Carl and Della Steen. She was raised in Nebraska and South Dakota, finishing her education in Box Elder, South Dakota. Helen married George John Bies in Sturgis, South Dakota on February 20, 1933. George preceded her in death in 1973. Helen was a homemaker but also worked outside the home in the healthcare industry. She worked many years at Grays Harbor Community Hospital starting at the old hospital and eventually retiring in 1976 at the new facility. She then worked at the Panorama City Community Center Restaurant until her retirement at age 80.
Helen enjoyed gardening, decorating her residence with Christmas lights, travelling (especially Mardi-Gras and Hawaii). She was an avid Mariner fan.
Helen is survived by her son, Donald and his wife, Delores Bies of Montesano and daughters, Joyce Murphy of Lacey and Shirley Daley of Shelton. She is also survived by her brother, Bud Steen, sister, Gladys Matthews, both of Rapid City, South Dakota and her brother, Harold Steen of Ridgefield, Washington, grandchildren, Jeri, Sheri, Mel and Darrin, five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Helen is preceded in death by her husband, George, her parents, Carl and Della, brother Martin Steen, sister, Peggy Marshall, sister, Alta Morris, brother, Buck Steen, brother, Teeks Steen and grandson, Mike Murphy.
