William and Ellen Whitsitt had migrated from Pennsylvania to Albermarle County, Virginia, where he was a member of the Albermarle Militia during the French and Indian Wars of 1752-1763. Just prior to the end of the Revolutionary War, the Whitsitts moved to the Martinsville, Virginia area, and from there to Nashville.
In 1801, the Whitsitts moved to Logan County, Kentucky. They had recently returned to Nashville when William Whitsitt died in 1811. Ellen Menees then returned to Logan County to live.
