He started Tennessee Furnace, an iron ore processing company, near Barton's Creek in Montgomery County, TN. In 1805 he purchased an iron ore forge located near his company from James Robertson, his father-in-law.

He was a War of 1812 veteran and served as Colonel of the 1st Regiment West Tennessee Militia, consisting of 500 soldiers, from January 1814 to May 1814.
