Butler Sommerville entered service as a volunteer and served in the Florida Campaign. He contracted an illness and was sent to St. Joseph's hospital in Nashville. He died after a steady decline at age 36 yrs and 3 mos. An obituary appeared on Jan. 3, 1838 in the Daily Republic Banner. Very little is known of Butler's life. In 1868 his niece M.E. Young petitioned congress for a pension to be paid to Martha Sommerville due to her having lost 2 brothers in service of their country. No action is known to have resulted from this petition; but M.E. Young wrote to President Jackson to request his intercession. The letter can be found in the Papers of Andrew Jackson Sept 1868-1869.
