Henry H. Hanrahan Jr., age 90, died February 29, 2012 in Toquerville, Utah at the home of his son, Doug. He had been fighting a long battle with heart disease. A Virginia native, he was born on March 20, 1921 in Portsmouth, Virginia.
Henry is survived by his wife of 66 years, Louise, and two sons, Henry H. Hanrahan III of King George, Virginia, and Douglas P. Hanrahan of Toquerville, Utah. He leaves behind seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Henry was predeceased by his parents, his brother Russell Hanrahan of Portsmouth, Virginia and his sister, Effie Mae Morrison of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Henry is a veteran of the United States Air Force, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel after 26 years of service. He served in World War II as part of the "Greatest Generation" flying 55 combat missions in the Pacific Theater as a navigator/bombardier in B-25 Mitchell bombers. He served again in the Korean War flying another 55 combat missions in B-26 Invader bombers over North Korea. During his 26 years of service Henry served with distinction, earning numerous awards and decorations along the way. Included in these awards, and most meaningful to him, are the Master Navigator wings and the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) awarded for valor in Korea.
He retired from the Air Force in 1968 and settled in Nashua, New Hampshire near his last duty station. Following his Air Force career he worked many more years in the manufacturing and computer industries and earned a bachelor's degree in business management from New Hampshire College. He finally retired from his civilian career at age 70. In 2003 Henry moved back to Virginia where he built a new home in King George.
Henry is a 32nd Degree Mason and was a life member of over 50 years at the Suffolk, Virginia Lodge. It was a great honor for his family to be invited by the Lodge to witness the ceremony in which he was awarded his 50-year membership pin.
Henry leaves his family a legacy of a life well-lived as a brave patriot and father. He set the example in leadership, discipline, integrity and loyalty to his country and his family. He will be missed
A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 5th at 3:00 PM in the chapel of Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, Virginia followed by burial with Henry's fellow warriors at Arlington National Cemetery Friday, July 6, 2012 at 9:00 AM.
