William Bottgenbach was born in Bonn, Germany. He came to America when a young man and learned upholstering in New York City and worked at his trade until the outbreak of the Civil War. He then enlisted in Company C, 17th New York Volunteer Infantry, and after an honorable discharge, enlisted in the United States Navy./ At the expiration of this enlistment he became a member of Co. N. 11th New Jersey and was captured at Richmond. He was held a prisoner in the famous Libby prison pen until the close of the war and was honorably discharged. Not content with his army experiences thus far he again enlisted to fight for Uncle Sam under the Stars and Stripes, this time as a member of Company B, First Regiment United States Cavalry and was a soldier at the Carlisle Barracks from which station he was discharged, honorably, in 1871. He then made Carlisle his home and engaged in the upholstering business and remained in it until he moved to Harrisburg, Pa. where he lived until his death.
he was a charter member of Captain Colwell Post 201 G.A.R. of Carlisle and also a member of St. John's Episcopal Church of Carlisle.

I have been unable to find son Harry's place of burial. I have found some interesting info on him.
