4th Jersey City Mayor. Born on a farm, he moved to Jersey City in 1825 and became a lawyer in 1834. The year before, he was made City Clerk. As a lawyer, he represented the selectman of Jersey City. In April of 1842, Bentley became Jersey City's 4th mayor. He served one two-year term as mayor, then left politics. He later organized the Mechanics' and Traders' Bank and became it's President. In addition, he was Vice-President of the Savings Bank of Jersey City, Treasurer and later Director of the Gas Company and Treasurer of the Jersey City and Bergen Plank Road Company.
