Norman Dunning Rideout was a native of Maine who came west during the great California Gold Rush. He became a successful merchant and banker in northern California. He chose Marysville as as his base of operations since it was the historic supply center for northern mines. His first major banking success was a partnership, Rideout and Smith Bank. He went on to control and link banks in Marysville, Oroville, Willows, Gridley, Chico, Auburn, Sacramento, and San Francisco. He married Phebe Abbott in October of 1858 and together they were a powerful and philanthropic couple, raising three children, and engaging in many civic activities. In addition to his many banking and business activities, Norman Rideout held positions as mayor, supervisor and councilman in Maysville. The family had a beautiful home in Marysville; after Norman's death the house and land were donated to the city for use as a hospital by Norman's widow, Phebe Rideout. The family had moved to San Francisco where Norman died in 1907. He is buried, as is his wife Phebe, at East Lawn Cemetery in Sacramento.
