George Thomas Walker was the son of Andrew and Jane Prince Walker. He was the descendant of several soldiers of the American Revolution. His paternal great grandfather was Colonel John Walker, DAR Ancestor Number A119449. Per the American historian, Lyman C. Draper, "after the Battle of King's Mountain, the Patriots could not stay at the site long for fear of Cornwallis, so they marched with prisoners to Colonel John Walker & stayed 2-3 days."

Through his mother, he was the great grandson of Henry Prince, DAR Ancestor Number A093240, and the great, great grandson of John Prince, DAR Ancestor Number A093245.

Walker served in the Confederate Army. After the war, he married the former Miss Mary Susan Petty, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Greenway Petty.
