MAYES
Virgil Lee, age 84, of Oklahoma City, passed away Friday, December 1, 2000, after a lengthy illness. He was born June 14, 1916, in Caney, Kansas, to Carl and Bertha (Houx) Mayes. The family moved to Oilton, OK area when he was small, where he grew to young adulthood. He married Dorothy Virginia Forcum in April of 1942. Dorothy preceded him in death, January 27, 1976. Virgil was a retired civil service employee of Tinker Air Force Base spending 30 years with TAFB in its Quality Control Division. Virgil was a U.S. Army World War II veteran serving 4 years with the 77th Evacuation hospital. His tour of duty included the North African Campaign, Sicily Invasion, Normandy Invasion and the liberation of western Europe. Upon returning from military service, he entered Oklahoma A & M in 1946, finishing with an Associates Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1948. Virgil moved the family to the Oklahoma City area in 1948 when he began his career with TAFB. Virgil was a member of Wilmont Place Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. He served as a deacon at several other Oklahoma City area Baptist churches as well as teaching Sunday School and as a leader in several classes for young people. He is survived by his current wife, Elaine Mayes of Oklahoma City, her daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and David Rutherford and their 3 children, Amy, Abby and Andrew, his daughter, Mary Mayes of Oklahoma City, his son and daughter-in-law, John and Kay Mayes of Stillwater, OK and John's daughter, Carly of Stillwater. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 4th, 2:00 PM, at Vondel L. Smith & Sons, 6934 S. Western, Okla. City with interment following at Resthaven Memory Gardens. Laurence A. Justice, pastor of Victory Baptist Church in Kansas City, MO will be officiating the services.
