Funeral services for Bliss resident William L. Domes, of Route 39, were held Sunday, February 24, 2002. Mr. Domes died Thursday, February 21, 2002, in Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, Springville, following a lengthy illness. He was 84.
Born in Sardinia on December 18, 1917, he was a son of Louis and Irene (Gilbert) Domes.
On August 1, 1941, in Arcade, he married the former Allene D. Churchhill, who died in 1991. He married the former Charlotte Mason, who survives, on March 17, 1995, in Lake Placid, Florida.
After retiring from the Eagle Highway Department, Mr. Domes devoted the rest of his life to Domes Tree Farm in Bliss, of which he was the owner and operator. Over the years, many of his customers became his friends.
He was a member of the New York State Christmas Tree Association. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, and his love of nature led him to devote his life to conservation of tress, fish, wildlife, and his much-loved bluebirds and hummingbirds.
Mr. Domes loved working with wood and making furniture, and became a woodcarver during the past five years. He was a member of the National Woodcarvers Association.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Domes is survived by a son, William R. (Katie) Domes of Arcade; a daughter, Donna (Frederick) Danks of Arcade; six step grandchildren, Laurie Taylor of Georgia, Richard Bigelow of Mercer, Pennsylvania, Jeffery Bigelow of New Port Ritchie, Florida, Maryanne Burnett of Lakeland, Florida, Thomas Bigelow of Arcade, and Lisa Paeplow of Lake Placid, Florida; two sisters, Beulah Bond of Springville and Arlene (Ken) Hall of Chaffee; a brother, Louis Domes of East Concord; four grandchildren, Scott, Ryan, Shannon and Megan; 10 step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his first wife, Mr. Domes was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Meyer.
The funeral services were held at W.S. Davis Funeral Home in Arcade, and were officiated by the Reverend Jeffrey Nowak. Burial will be in Freedom Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Bliss Rescue Squad.
