Allan A. Burton was born in Garrard County, Kentucky in the Buckeye section of the county. He early on demonstrated ability as a student and was soon enrolled in the Garrard Academy, a private school in Lancaster, Kentucky. He rose to prominence as an effective lawyer, abolitionist, and staunch Unionist. In 1860, Burton canvassed the Kentucky on behalf of Abraham Lincoln. With Lincoln's inauguration, he was appointed a judge on the federal court for the Dakota Territory, but was soon back in Kentucky organizing the first Union recruitment and training in the South at Camp Dick Robinson in Garrard County. President Ulysses Grant appointed him Secretary of the Santo Domingo Commission in 1871 where he served with with distinction with Frederick Douglass. In later life, Burton farmed in Illinois and Wisconsin where he own large tracts of land.
