Kingsport, June 25. - Hearing the cries of distress from a number of women who Sunday afternoon stood on the banks of the Holston river, and watched A A Loyd and Lawrence Simpson, two young men of this place, who were bathing on the river, sink for the third time, Pascal Bolton, soldier in Company C, First Tennessee regiment, swam to the young men and succeeded in swimming with their bodies to the shore. Physicians tried three hours, but in vain, to resuscitate them.
Bolton has been highly praised for his effort to save the young men. If he had received the distress call a few seconds earlier, spectators believe that he would have saved the lives of both men.
Loyd and Simpson were bathing in the north fork of the Holston river, near the bridge above here. Loyd's muscles cramped so much that he was unable to swim, and was drowning. Simpson saw his friend's condition and attempted to rescue him. It is presumed that the struggles of Loyd, which were more than Simpson could compete with, caused both young men to drown.
Both young men were widely known as popular in social and business circles here. Mr Loyd was a bookkeeper for one of the leading Kingsport firms and Mr Simpson was connected with a marble company. Loyd was married and his wife survives him. His body was taken to Mountain City, his former home, for interment. Simpson was unmarried. His body was taken to Bluefield, Va, his old home for burial.
