Judge Nields, Lottery Buster, Prominent in Wierton Case, Dies
Wilmington, Del. (AP) – John P. Nields, 75, retired judge of U S district court of Delaware, died unexpectedly last night while on a vacation at Nahant, Mass.

Appointed by President Hoover in 1930, Judge Nields retired in 1941. He was called back to the bench frequently after his retirement to give opinions, and had presided at naturalization terms. Before he became a judge he served as U.S. District attorney.

Among the important cases he heard during his active judgeship was that of the United States vs. the Weirton Steel Company, in which the company was charged with violating a section of the National Industry Recovery Act (N.I.R.A.) through the existence of a company union. Judge Nields ruled that the section, as it related to the company was illegal.

While he was district attorney he helped smash the Louisiana lottery and Honduras lottery, whose headquarters and printing establishments were in Wilmington. (Williamsport Sun-Gazette, Williamsport, PA, August 27, 1943)
