James Madison Alford was an Alford of Alfordsville. His grandfather James Alford (1791-1864) arrived in Daviess County with his brother William Alford from Virginia by 1810. The Alfords were in Virginia from the early 18th century at least.

Alfordsville was founded in 1845 and was named for his grandfather James Alford. The first house, still standing, was built by James Alford.

His father George Washington Alford (1817-1845) died young, and his mother Nancy White Alford remarried Michael Truelove in 1847. James is found in the Truelove household in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. In 1860 the entries are very mangled and he is listed as "Manderson Trueblood."

He served briefly during the Civil War in the 6th Regiment, Indiana Infantry. He enlisted at Washington, IN on 20 April 1861 and was demobilized in Indianapolis on 2 August 1861. He also registered for the draft in 1863. His widow applied for a pension in 1914.

He married first Mary Jane Chandler in 1865.

Their children were:
* Emma Jane Alford DeBerry 1866-1949
* William Howard Alford 1870-1890
* Nancy Alford 1871-1895
* Nathaniel Alford 1874-1944
* Clara Alford 1876-1969
* George Washington Alford 1880-1963 (died in Calfornia, burial location unknown)

His first wife died in 1881 and he remarried the widowed Floria McCord Chandler in 1883. The McCords were also one of the original Daviess County families. Her late husband was a cousin of his late wife.

Their children were:
* James Stanley Alford 1883-1964
* Leona Alford Brown 1886-1977
* Benjamin Harrison Alford 1888-1972 (died in Calfornia, burial location unknown)
* Eula Alford Driver 1890-1977
* Helen Alford Cooper 1896-1968

James Madison Alford was a farmer. The censuses show him living in Daviess County as a child, in Rutherford, Martin County; then in Madison, Dubois County. These three counties are next to each other and Alfordsville sits on the border of Daviess and Martin Counties.

It is worth noting that the Alfords often named their sons after U.S. presidents.

His sister Lavina Alford Harbison who was born in 1844 seems to have died between December 1864 when she married Leroy T. Harbison and 1867 when he remarried her step-sister Lydia Truelove. The location of her grave is not known by me.
