Born and raised on the Whiteley Township, Greene County PA farm settled by his grandfather in 1799. Following the death of his first wife, Nancy Bradford, Jonathan went to Wana, VA (now WV) in the mid 1850s to work on the construction of a covered bridge across the Virginia Fork of Dunkard Creek. He decided to stay when he found himself a new wife and a profession, grist milling.
He and his second wife, Eliza Lantz, bought a half interest in the water powered mill at Wana in 1870 and stayed until 1877 when they sold that interest and bought the steam powered mill at Deep Valley, PA. where Jonathan was the miller until his death due to a paralytic stroke in 1903.
