Robert M. Beecher dead at 77 years
Robert Malcolm Beecher, deputy collector of internal revenue for nearly 16 years until he resigned on account of ill health on Jan. 1, died at 3 a.m. today at the home of his son, Philip M. Beecher, 113 Kirk avenue.
Mr. Beecher was born in Pleasant Valley, Dutchess county, Oct. 19, 1830. He received his early education in New York city and in New Haven, Conn. He left school at 14 and served in a shipping office in New York city.
In 1847 he located in this city, served one year in a dry goods store and then engaged as bookkeeper in the old Star newspaper office, remaining there four years. He then, with an instructor, opened a daguerreotype gallery in Broadway, New York. He then served in a New York wholesale office two years; was bookkeeper in Port Byron one year; in Syracuse in a dry goods store one year; in Cardiff as proprietor of a general store for two years and again located in this city in 1857, accepting a position in the canal collector's office. Later he was assistant weighmaster, next serving two years in the canal superintendent's office.
He then served two years as a clerk in the engineering department. In the latter part of 1861 Mr. Beecher assumed charge of the D.L. & W. coal business at Geddes, which he conducted until the spring of 1863.
Mr. Beecher was always a Democrat, and was elected City Clerk in 1863. At the close of his term he became bookkeeper for the Onondaga Salt company, where he remained two years after which he was assistant secretary under the late John W. Baker, until 1872.
He then associated himself with Henry M. Bancroft in general insurance business.
In 1881 Mr. Beecher took charge of the office business of Pierce, Butler & Pierce, continuing until his appointment as cashier in the internal revenue office under the late William A. Beech in 1886. He was appointed deputy collector in 1894.
Mr. Beecher was elected supervisor of the Seventh ward in 1885. He was one of the original members of the old Syracuse Citizens Corps, and served 15 years in the National Guard, holding the rank of major on General D.H. Bruce's staff. Mr. Beecher married Malvina E. Park Cuddeback.
Mr. Beecher leaves besides his widow two sons and one daughter, Phillip M. and Frank C. Beecher, and Mrs. George W. Baxter.
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, the rev. E.W. Saphere and the Rev. John A. Staunton of Utica officiating.
