Gardenhire was a well known businessman. During an argument, he was brutally beaten to death by Dr. Walton P. Allen of Dayton, Tennessee. One year later, Dr. Allen was acquited of the murder by a Rhea County jury by reason of temporary insanity. Soon after his acquital, Dr. Allen shot and killed his 9 yr. old son, Walton Jr. and then killed himself.
