Urged by his friend William Thaw, Abbott enlisted in France's Service Aeronautique on April 2, 1917. He underwent aviation and acrobatic training at Avord and Pau, and he earned his brevet on the Nieuport on August 7, 1917.
Caporal Abbott was assigned to Escadrille SPA 154 at the Front and was shortly promoted to Sergent. He flew many combat patrols over the Aisne and Marne sectors and was credited with two aerial victories.
Abbott was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Signal Corps on August 15, 1918, and he was made a test pilot at Air Service Headquarters in Paris. He continued as a test pilot at Colombey-les-Belles from September 3 to the end of the war on November 11, 1918. Abbott was awarded France's Croix de Guerre with Palm and Star for his two aerial victories.
Following his service during World War One, Abbott joined the U.S. Foreign Service in 1920 serving in Athens, Dublin, London, Stockholm, Belgrade, Hamburg, Caracas, Fiji, and Washington, D.C. In 1949, he was appointed Consul General in Belfast, Ireland. He retired in 1951. Abbott married Mary Alice Unanda-Scareen of Sweden.
