Civil War Union Army Surgeon. He was commissioned as Assistant Surgeon, Field and Staff, 28th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on October 2, 1862, and served until honorably mustered out on July 6, 1863.

On April 19, 1904 he filed for a US Army Invalid Veteran Pension (Application #1312957, Certificate #1090170).

On November 2, 1911, his wife, Sarah S. Baker, filed for a US Army Widow's Pension (Application #974377, Certificate #734925).

The death of Benjamin N. Baker is the loss to Rhinebeck of its oldest practicing physician. His death is, likewise, and of greater significance, the loss of one of the best known, most respected and dearly loved citizens of the town. For nearly half a century he has been a resident of this village; active in business; active in his profession; active in the affairs of his church, as a member of its consistory for many years: and an ardent and enthusiastic member of the Grand Army of the Republic, to which body he belonged by reason of distinguished service in the Union Army during the war between the States.
