“DIED IN CHURCH
JAMES LARDNER EXPIRED SUDDENLY SUNDAY MORNING

Third Stroke of Paralysis End Life of Early Pioneer While Attending Church

While seated in the house of God last Sunday morning James Lardner, an aged early settler of Jefferson county, passes to his final reward as the result of the third stroke of paralysis which has been visited upon him.

Mr. Lardner was 68 years old and for some years has been very feeble. Last Sunday morning he went to the Catholic church of which he was a member, to attend services. He was very weak. He had been in church about ten minutes and services were just beginning when he was noticed to sink in his seat. It was immediately seen that all was not right and Father Carey and other friends went to his side. They saw at once that paralysis had visited Mr. Lardner and he was immediately removed to the parsonage and Dr. Hawes summoned. When the doctor arrived he pronounced life extinct.

The deceased was a native of Ireland, being born in county Clare January 1, 1841. He came to America in April, 1862, and five years later was united in marriage to Miss Mary Ann Cashmann of Fort Des Moines, Iowa. Thirteen children were born to this union, eight of whom survive. They are Mrs. Carroll of Omaha, Mrs. Ray Wiggins of this city, and James, Susie, Will, Thomas, Mike and Ada who reside on the homestead nine miles south of Fairbury. Mrs. M. Hickey of Ottumwa, a sister, also survives.

Mr. Lardner came to Jefferson county in 1870, and homesteaded the place upon which he lived until death claimed him. About a week previous to his demise he came to Fairbury and was visiting at the home of his daughter Mrs. Wiggins. On Friday, January 1st, the anniversary of his birth, he attended church and received Holy Communion. Two strokes of paralysis has been visited upon him previous to the stroke that claimed his life, and had left him in a weakened condition.

The funeral was held Tuesday morning from the Catholic church and the body was laid to rest in the Fairbury cemetery.
