Crossville Chronicle February 15, 1934

Saturday evening at 6:45 p.m. Oscar P Hyder, 48, was struck by a truck on North Broadway and instantly killed.
The funeral was held in the M E Church South at 3:30 p.m. Monday with Judge C E Snodgrass presiding, followed by interment in the City cemetery.
The deceased had been working on Saturdays with Reed Mercantile Company delivering groceries and had just made a delivery to the home of Claud Parham and was turning his car in the road to return to the store. The exact time of the accident was determined by the fact that the watch Mr Hyder was carrying stopped at 6:45 p.m.
A truck owned by Jody Cox, with Fred Farmer, Dallas Tabor, Rex Smith and Mr Cox in it came rapidly over the hill going north. The truck struck the rear of the delivery car driven by Mr Hyder. The truck knocked the car around quickly, and threw Mr Hyder out in the road and the hind wheels of the truck are said to have run over his chest and killed him instantly.
From the best information available, it seems that the Cox truck either had poor brakes or brakes that would not hold at all and for that reason could not be stopped until it had gone some 30 or 40 steps beyond the point where it struck the delivery car. Those in the Cox truck stated at the inquest that before they could stop the truck and get back to Mr Hyder as he lay in the road, a truck from Cumberland Mountain School passed but did not hit the body.
Following the truck came a car carrying 8 or 10 persons going to a basketball game at the Crossville gym. The car struck the body and dragged it 24 steps, according to a statement made by Lando Pace, who went to the scene of the accident and stepped the distance....
Cox is said to have claimed it was not his truck that hit Mr Hyder. Damage to the bumper of his truck, along with traces of blood caused his arrest and the subsequent inquest.
The deceased was married March 18, 1907 to Miss Olia Day. Four children , 3 sons and 1 daughter, were born to this union. All are living. Two sons, Elmo and Floyd, are married. One son, Barney, is a senior in high school. The daughter, Miss Nell, is attending the city school.
