CARPENTER - First Lieutenant Whitman S. Carpenter, killed in action at Iwo Jima Volcanic Islands, February 21, 1945. Son of Mr and Mrs. Harry C. Carpenter and brother of Jeane M. Carpenter. Prayer servcie at the grave in Wallkill Cemetery, Tuesday morning at eleven-thirty o'clock, Rev. Howard B. Haines officiating. Rites Conducted For Lt. Carpenter
Military Organization at Services in Cemetery

Funeral services for First Lieutenant Whitman S. Carpenter, 218 Wisner avenue extension, were conducted at the grave in Wallkill Cemetery, Phillipsburg, yesterday, shortly after arrival of the body by train. Lieutenant Carpenter died at Iwo Jima, February twenty-first, 1945. The Rev. Howard B. Haines, first Presbyterian Church, officiated, with military services under direction of the Middletown Detachment, Marine Corps League. William Novak, League commandant, was in charge, assisted by Captain George Shepard, chaplain, and Mrs. Shirley Clemmer, adjutant. Bearers were Earl League, Richard Bedford, Frank Lane, Arthur Livesey, William Cross and Gerald Warren. First Lieutenant Arthur D. Challacombe, Jr., USMC, accompanied the remains here and presented the flag to the family at the grave. Bugler Francis Carey sounded taps, with echo by Earl J. Brown. Other organizations represented were Middletown Post and Goldberg Post, American Legion, and Middletown Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
